Definition & Overview
When conference interpreters are recruited for assignments outside their professional domicile (domicile fiscal), commercial agreements require remuneration for non-working travel time, round-trip transport, hotel accommodations, and a daily subsistence allowance known as Per Diem (daily allowance for meals and incidental expenses).
Standard Industry Rules
- Travel Day Compensation: Travel days requiring more than 4 hours of door-to-door transit (or crossing multiple time zones) are billed at 50% to 100% of the full daily interpretation fee.
- Mandatory Rest Day: Transcontinental travel crossing four or more time zones contractually mandates a 24-hour acclimatization rest day before the first active booth shift.
- Per Diem Disbursements: Per diem covers individual meals, local ground transit, and incidentals, calculated based on UN or European Commission official daily country rates.
- Individual Hotel Rooms: Single-occupancy hotel rooms with soundproof acoustic insulation are mandatory to ensure rest between intensive consecutive summit days.
