Interpretation Booth Dimensions & Spatial Clearances

Exact physical measurements, internal volumes, door swing radiuses, and venue ballroom setbacks for simultaneous interpreting cabins under ISO 4043 and ISO 2603.

When conference planners and AV sound engineers draft ballroom CAD drawings and staging schematics, incorrect booth dimensions are among the most frequent on-site failure points. A mobile simultaneous interpretation booth is not a generic cubicle: it is an acoustically sealed isolation room with strict spatial, thermal, and visual geometry.

Under international standards (ISO 4043:2016 for mobile transportable booths and ISO 2603 for permanent built-in cabins), conference facilities must provide adequate internal volume for interpreters to endure 8-hour rotation shifts without air depletion, claustrophobia, or visual strain.

Standard Dimensions by Booth Capacity

The table below provides minimum internal and external dimensions for compliant simultaneous interpretation cabins:

Booth ConfigurationInternal Dimensions (W × D × H)External Footprint (W × D × H)Minimum Internal Volume

Ballroom Floor Plan Setbacks & Clearances

Placing an interpreter booth against a ballroom wall without clearance creates severe operational and safety hazards. Incorporate these mandatory clearances into your floor plans:

Internal Working Surface & Ergonomics

Inside the cabin, the working table must span the entire width of the front viewing glass to hold interpreter consoles, document stands, and reference laptops:

Acoustic Glazing & Sightline Geometry

Under ISO 4043 standards, video monitors are an auxiliary backup, never a primary substitute for direct physical sightlines:

  1. Front Window Dimensions: The front viewing glass must extend across the entire front panel, spanning a vertical height of at least 0.80 m (starting directly at desk level: 0.73 m to 1.53 m).
  2. Side Windows: Booths must feature lateral glass panels extending at least 0.60 m back from the front window, enabling interpreters to look sideways into adjacent language booths for silent coordination.
  3. Acoustic Glass Quality: Glazing must consist of dual non-parallel acoustic laminated glass panels to prevent acoustic reflections and eliminate visual distortion.

Airflow & Ventilation Calculation

Two adults breathing inside an airtight 5-cubic-meter space generate dangerous CO2 accumulation and rapid thermal buildup within 15 minutes. ISO 4043 mandates:

CAD Layout Rule of Thumb: When allocating ballroom floor space for a 4-language setup (3 interpreter booths), allocate a footprint of at least 6.5 meters width by 3.5 meters total depth (including rear technician corridor) to guarantee full ISO compliance.
