In conference interpreting, an interpreter's professional domicile is their formally declared official operating base (registered with professional conference interpreting associations). Rather than reflecting physical personal residence, the professional domicile establishes the contractual point of departure and return for all assignments. Assignments taking place within the declared metropolitan area are billed as local work; assignments occurring outside this boundary trigger mandatory non-local travel provisions.

Operational Rules & Standard Guidance

• Single Declared Domicile: Under professional conference standards, an interpreter may only maintain one professional domicile at any given time, preventing arbitrary switching to undercut local market rates or claim inflated travel expenses.
• Local Boundary Radii: Standard contracts stipulate that any conference venue located beyond a specific distance (typically 30–50 km, or exceeding 1 hour of transit from the city center) classifies as a non-local assignment.
• Non-Local Contractual Riders: When hiring an interpreter outside their professional domicile, the agency or client must provide:
  • Round-trip economy or business-class transit (flights, intercity rail, or mileage reimbursement).
  • Paid travel time indemnity (typically 50% of the daily fee per travel day).
  • Single-occupancy hotel accommodation with breakfast at or adjacent to the conference venue.
  • Daily subsistence allowance (per diem) to cover meals, local transfers, and incidental expenses.
• Recruitment Strategy: Chief Interpreters prioritize recruiting interpreters with professional domiciles in the host city to minimize non-productive travel overhead and reduce client budgeting friction.
